Often, movies are made. Occasionally, very bad movies are made in an attempt to parody a certain genre of movie. Even more rarely, though increasing with every movie-raised generation, there are movies made in which the characters are attempting to remake certain other movies. Mere seconds after Be Kind, Rewind was publicized, up crops the Son of Rambow. Now, I’ve never seen Rambo, but between the soothing tunes, the sundance label, and adorable british kid with stunt-related ambitions plot line, this looks pretty much like a winner. This looks loveable, structured, and action-packed. I’m slightly weary of the protagonist-gets-caught-up-in-the-cool-kids-and-forgets-his-roots plot line. Anything that can be summed up in Avril Lavigne’s Complicated is somewhat disturbing in that way (somebody else, round everyone else..). But you know, Life’s like this. And to make a trailer for this? Just show them trying to emulate a few famous Rambo moments, throw in the classic “indie movie” text (you know you’ve seen that same text in the trailers for Juno, Napoleon Dynamite, and much more), and cap it off with the tag-along kid getting catapulted through the air three or four..or twelve times. On a personal note, I did not make movies as a kid, but little kids making a slate on their fingers seems a bit too genius for me. On a not personal note, making movies about imitating other movies is so many levels of movie, I’m not even sure who’s supposed to care. But at least these suckers have the whole Billy Elliot thing going for them.
