For all of two seconds, it seems that this trailer is aiming to masquerade as serious. The mind hardly has enough time to process this theory, however, before the first awestruck, unison “whooa” hits the screen, and one realizes…this trailer doesn’t want to mess with your perceptions, or bowl you over with an impressive tagline. It just showcases two intensely loveable stoners who are suddenly able to do whatever they want, whenever they want. It acknowledges that there’s something infallibly endearing about Bill and the bowl-cut sporting Ted being continually baffled by every adult ever, including the voice over artist. Like the movie itself, the trailer does something brilliant – it presents itself as insubstantial enough to be easily consumed, while betraying the fact that it was meticulously and skillfully constructed. Bestowed with the rare trailer godsend of characters that can be portrayed in a series of one-liners, this editor makes some inspired choices, such as throwing in the unnecessary clip of Bill saying, “I’m Bill S. Preston!” and being relatively blasé about some of the more substantial jokes, like the Noah’s Ark line. Not to mention the mere presence of “We are in danger of flunking most heinously tomorrow”. Packed to the brim with catch phrases and subtleties in equal measure, this 1 minute 54 second sample is primed to gracefully represent nothing more or less than the movie itself, in all of its candid glory.
