It was only a matter of time before someone out there devised a tactful, witty way to handle the 21st century do-it-yourself video phenomenon. It just makes so much sense it’s Gondry. I’m placing all of my trust in him, and him alone, to deliver a final message that against all odds, takes the paradox right under this movie’s feet (because in the trailer, it’s screaming for tiers of ironic postmodern thought). Even with him at the forefront, I am consumed by how, on god’s green earth, this movie is going to be structured, seemingly inevitable montages aside. In any case, it has definitely endearing factors – how Mos Def whines “You’re magnetiiizzed” or the matter of fact way jack black says, “but we erased that..”, how well-chosen the movies seem to be (2001 looks great), and most of all, how this really largely reaffirms that the ghostbuster theme song is indubitably loved on a universal scale. It’s almost mystical to me that the featured plot elements can exist outside of a deceptively-edited, three minute format. Even with montages or some sort of brilliant editing, it’s difficult for me to imagine it retaining the levels of charm established in the disconnected-clip format. I somehow trust for this movie to turn out for the best, but no matter what..there will always be the trailer.
On a sidenote, a really huge standout trailer for me was the Eternal Sunshine trailer..not because the movie looked extremely appealing (which it did), and not because of some of my favorite simple graphics work (which it has..behind the names towards the end), and not even because i feel like it totally represented the movie (which is iffy), but because it introduced me to mr. blue sky, despite using it in such an uncomfortably pun-like way. “Sun is shining in the sky..”..Eternal SUNshine..get it? It’s..it’s the sun..oh, nevermind.
